To maintain Maintained Status — the right to continue studying and working legally while waiting for the result — it is crucial to pay close attention to the deadline for online submission.
The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) system operates according to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), not the local time zone in any of Canada's provinces. Meanwhile, the application for extension (Study Permit, Work Permit, or Visitor Record) must be successfully submitted before 11:59 PM UTC on the expiration date of your document.
If the submission occurs after 11:59 PM UTC, the system will consider your application as submitted after your permit has expired.
Loss of status: You must immediately stop studying and working.
Restoration: You must go through the status restoration process within 90 days, which is more costly and carries higher legal risks.
Therefore, the most important note is that you must always check the time zone or refer to the corresponding local time conversion (on the expiration date) compared to UTC.
To avoid risks or timezone errors, IRCC recommends applicants complete the application at least 30 days before the expiration of the current document.
