Congratulations on starting your new journey in Canada! After landing safely, the first and most important thing is to complete the necessary paperwork. Don’t hesitate, make sure to handle the following documents so your family is ready for work, study, and healthcare services!
1. TOP PRIORITY DOCUMENTS (Complete within the first week of arrival in Canada)
• Social Insurance Number (SIN): This is your social security number, essential for working and paying taxes. You should apply for it as soon as you arrive in Canada. The process usually takes 15-20 minutes if you have the required documents (Work/Study/PR Permit).
• Open a Bank Account: This is necessary for receiving your salary and paying bills. Most major banks in Canada offer Newcomer Packages with benefits for new arrivals.
• Register for a Phone Number & Internet: A phone is a crucial communication tool with employers, schools, and government agencies. Common carriers include Rogers, Bell, Telus, and Freedom Mobile.
2. SECOND PRIORITY DOCUMENTS (Complete once you have a stable residential address)
• Health Card: This may have different names depending on the province (e.g., OHIP in Ontario, BC CareCard in British Columbia, RAMQ in Quebec). Healthcare services in Canada are generally free, but there is often a waiting period of 2-3 months after registration. You will need to purchase private travel insurance for this waiting period.
• Credit Card: Essential for building your credit history (Credit Score). You can start with a Secured Credit Card or a Newcomer Credit Card. Remember to always make payments on time to build a good credit score, which will be helpful if you need to take out a loan for a house or car later on.
3. THIRD PRIORITY DOCUMENTS: DRIVER'S LICENSE & TRANSPORTATION PROCEDURES
• Driver's License: A Canadian driver's license is the most important legal ID document, replacing your passport in most daily transactions. Depending on your Vietnamese driver’s license and the province you live in, you may be able to take the test immediately or you may have to wait for some time.
• Register for a Transit Pass/Bus Pass/Subway Card: Depending on the city (e.g., Presto in Toronto, Compass in Vancouver), having these cards will make commuting easier and cheaper than buying single tickets.
Remember to always bring your Passport & Permit (Study/Work Permit/PR Card) when completing these procedures. Check the specific rules for the province you're living in, as regulations for Health Cards and Driver's Licenses may vary.
