Moving to a new country always comes with challenges. Here are 5 common "pitfalls" that many newcomers face when they arrive in Canada. Let's go through them with PathCAN now!

❌ 1. Rental Scams
This is the most dangerous risk for newcomers. Scammers often ask for a deposit before you’ve seen the actual property, or pretend to be the landlord.

Never send money (especially the 1st month deposit) before viewing the property in person (or via video call with someone familiar in Canada) and signing a legal lease agreement.

Always ask for the landlord's ID and verify information through trusted groups or websites.

❌ 2. Delaying Important Document Applications
Many people delay applying for basic documents because they think "I don't need them right away." This can cause a lot of trouble later on.

Apply for your SIN (Social Insurance Number) as soon as you arrive in Canada. The SIN is essential for employment, taxes, and receiving benefits.

Apply for your Health Card (OHIP, BC CareCard, etc.) as soon as you're eligible to receive free healthcare services in your province.

❌ 3. Focusing Only on "Basic" Jobs & Forgetting Networking
Many Vietnamese newcomers seek jobs that require little English to settle quickly, but miss out on opportunities for professional jobs and networking.

Attend events, workshops, or mentorship programs for immigrants to connect with professionals in your industry.

Invest time in learning English and familiarize yourself with writing a Canadian-style Resume/CV.

❌ 4. Not Using Public Libraries
Did you know that Canadian libraries are not just for reading books? They are a massive resource, completely free.

Register for a library card right away! You'll get free access to the internet, rent movies/music, take online courses, and even participate in English classes or job-search workshops.

❌ 5. Being Complacent with Financial Management & Building Credit History
Many people use only cash or debit cards and don’t start building a credit history early. Your Credit Score is crucial when you want to rent a good home, buy a car, or take out loans in the future.

Open a credit card (with a low limit, e.g., $500 - $1000) as soon as possible.

Use your credit card responsibly and always make payments on time to build a good credit history.

Hope you and your family have a smooth start in the wonderful country of Canada!
