Winter in Canada is not just a season, it's an experience! With temperatures often dropping below 0°C (and sometimes as low as -30°C or even lower in some northern regions), preparation is key to keeping your family healthy and fully enjoying the beauty of the freezing winter.

I - Canada's Warmth-keeping Principles
The most important tip for staying warm is not just wearing thick clothes, but applying the principle of LAYERING.

1. Base Layer: Moisture-Wicking
•        Keeps your skin dry by drawing sweat away from your body. Wet skin will make you feel much colder.
•        Thermal wear or synthetic fabrics like polyester are ideal. Avoid cotton, as it retains moisture for a long time!

2. Middle Layer: Insulation
•        Retains body heat.
•        Wool sweaters, fleece, or thin down/puffer jackets.
•        Outer Layer: Wind & Water Protection
•        Protects you from the cold wind, snow, and hail.
•        High-quality winter jackets that are waterproof/windproof with hoods.

Additionally, don't forget the body parts that are more vulnerable to heat loss or cold-related damage:

•        Head & Ears: Wear wool hats (beanies) or hoods since the head loses heat the fastest.
•        Hands: Wear waterproof gloves (mittens are generally warmer than gloves).
•        Feet: Wear warm wool socks and waterproof boots with non-slip soles (e.g., boots rated for extreme cold temperatures).
•        Face & Neck: Use a thick scarf or neck gaiter and face moisturizer to prevent dry skin and cracking.

II - Keep Your Family and Home Warm

•        Check the Heater: Ensure your furnace is working well before winter arrives. Replace the air filter to keep it running efficiently.
•        Humidifier: Dry indoor air can cause discomfort. A humidifier will help maintain moisture in the air, which is beneficial for your skin and respiratory system.
•        Prevent Cold from the Floors: Use thick area rugs, especially on lower levels, to insulate the floors.
•        Warm Drinks: Brew tea, coffee, hot chocolate, or warming soups to keep your body warm from the inside.
•        Enjoy the Sun: Open the curtains during the day to absorb sunlight (heat gain), naturally warming your home and saving on electricity.
Winter is a chance to explore fun activities like ice skating, skiing, and watching the snowfall. Be well-prepared to ensure your family enjoys a healthy, warm, and memorable winter!
