As an international student in Canada, your safety and well-being should always be a top priority. That’s why student health insurance in Canada is an essential and reliable option. It not only enhances your protection while studying far from home but also gives you peace of mind — allowing you to fully enjoy your academic and personal experiences in the land of maple leaves.
In addition to public coverage, Canada also offers private health insurance plans that provide extended benefits not covered by provincial systems — such as enhanced health services or additional prescription coverage. However, these private plans usually cost more than public insurance.
Health insurance is mandatory for all international students in Canada.
Depending on the province you're studying in, you will be enrolled in one of the following systems:
- UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan) - mostly in Ontario
- MSP (Medical Services Plan) - used in British Columbia (BC)
Make sure you renew your health insurance before it expires to stay protected.
1. Renewing UHIP – Ontario and similar provinces
UHIP applies mainly to students in Ontario (Toronto, Ottawa, Waterloo, etc.).
How to renew UHIP:
Check the expiration date: UHIP is typically valid for the academic year (September–August) or per semester (January or May intake).
Look for renewal emails from your school: Colleges/universities will notify you when it's time to renew.
Log into your student portal (e.g., MyPage or Student Account): Follow the instructions to confirm or renew UHIP.
Pay the UHIP fee: Usually bundled with tuition or paid separately.
Receive your new UHIP card: Once payment is processed, your new digital insurance card will be sent via email or downloadable from Cowan Insurance / Manulife (depending on your school).
Notes:
If you're taking summer classes, make sure to check whether a separate UHIP renewal is required.
If you're taking a break from school or leaving Canada, notify your school to adjust or cancel your UHIP coverage accordingly.
2. Renewing MSP – British Columbia (BC)
If you're studying in British Columbia (e.g., Vancouver, Victoria), you’ll be covered under MSP, the province’s public health plan.
How to renew MSP:
Check your MSP expiration date: MSP is usually valid for one year and must be renewed annually.
Renew online:
➔ Visit the official Health Insurance BC (HIBC) website.
➔ Complete the Account Change Form or update your details online.
➔ Required documents: your Personal Health Number (PHN) and a valid study permit.
Pay the MSP premium (if applicable):
➔ If you’re responsible for paying the fee yourself, make sure to pay on time (approx. $75 CAD/month, depending on your situation).
Wait for confirmation: You’ll receive an email or letter confirming your renewal status.
Notes:
If your study permit is expiring, you must renew it before renewing your MSP.
MSP renewal processing may take a few weeks, so it’s best to apply well before your current coverage ends.
