Canada Day is the national holiday of Canada, celebrated every year on July 1st. This holiday commemorates the founding of the Canadian Confederation in 1867, when the British North America Act was passed, uniting the four provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into one nation. Instead of calling it “Independence Day” like in the U.S., Canadians refer to this day as Canada Day. However, this name was officially adopted only in 1982; before that, the holiday was known as Dominion Day.

The celebration of Canada Day includes various outdoor events such as parades, street festivals, barbecues, air and sea displays, fireworks, and free music performances. A special feature of Canada Day is the naturalization ceremony held on July 1st, where new citizens are officially welcomed. However, many Canadians who are already citizens also attend the ceremony to show their patriotism and national pride.

In Quebec, Canada Day is also known as Moving Day. This is a special tradition in the city, as it coincides with the end of the annual lease agreements.
