If you think Toronto is expensive… you're only partially right. British Columbia actually takes the crown for having the highest rental prices in Canada!
Vancouver – the largest city in British Columbia – holds the title of “renting one room = losing half your paycheck.” The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment here has reached or exceeded $2,500 CAD/month!
Meanwhile:
• Toronto (Ontario): not far behind, around $2,300–2,400 CAD/month.
• Calgary (Alberta): more affordable at approximately $1,700 CAD/month.
• Montreal (Quebec): around $1,600 CAD/month.
So why is British Columbia such an expensive province?
• One of the mildest climates in Canada – less snow, more sunshine (this is a major reason why many immigrants choose this place for a fresh start)
• High levels of investment and rental demand, while supply never quite meets the need
• Increasing numbers of international students – it’s a dream destination for people around the world
According to Rentals.ca, the most recent rental prices in Vancouver are:
• 1-bedroom unit:
≈ $2,600 – $2,800 CAD/month
(Some downtown areas like Yaletown, West End can reach $3,000 CAD!)
• 2-bedroom unit:
≈ $3,300 – $3,800 CAD/month
(Some can even go beyond $4,000 CAD if near the ocean or in high-rise buildings)
• Studio (open-concept single room):
≈ $2,100 – $2,400 CAD/month
Rental costs in Vancouver have increased by more than 25% over the past two years. Many people have had to move to the suburbs, share housing, or accept longer commutes to cut costs.
Despite these jaw-dropping prices, many still dream of living and working in Vancouver.
