Summer in many other countries is often uncomfortably hot, but Canada is different. Due to its proximity to the Arctic, the temperature in the land of the maple leaf is much cooler compared to many other temperate countries during the same time of year. Summer in Canada is also filled with vibrant natural landscapes and a wide variety of outdoor activities. It is the season of exciting festivals and diverse cuisine.
1. Victoria, British Columbia
The capital city of British Columbia, Victoria is known for its sunny summer weather and abundance of outdoor activities. From kayaking and whale watching to scenic hikes, Victoria is an ideal summer destination for families. You can also immerse yourself in the city’s cultural scene with festivals like the Victoria Fringe Festival, Organic Islands Festival, Great Canadian Beer Festival, and Vegtoria – Victoria’s annual vegan celebration.
2. Golden, British Columbia
Surrounded by six national parks, Golden is one of the top destinations in Canada for outdoor adventures and wildlife viewing. Summer activities include hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, paragliding, and even whitewater rafting. Be sure to visit Glacier National Park, Yoho National Park, and the Columbia Wetlands to the south of the town. The wetlands are the longest protected wetland area in North America and home to over 200 species of birds and other wildlife.
3. Okanagan Valley, British Columbia
A hidden gem in southern British Columbia, the Okanagan Valley is one of the warmest regions in Canada, making it a perfect place to kick off your summer vacation. Stretch out on sandy shores, swim in the crystal-clear lakes, or sip a glass of the region’s renowned wine as you gaze out over rolling hills—this place truly has it all.
4. Calgary, Alberta
The Calgary Stampede—a world-famous rodeo and exhibition—is one of the city’s biggest draws, but Calgary also offers a vibrant lineup of food and music festivals throughout the summer. And for food lovers, don’t miss tasting your way through Taste of Calgary, Calgary Ribfest, and many more delicious celebrations.
