The Co-op program, officially known as Co-operative Education Programs, is a specialized course designed to help students gain work experience and apply theoretical knowledge in real-life situations. Instead of learning only theory in class, the Co-op program allows students to work at companies to earn academic credits.
If you choose a study program that includes a Co-op term, this will be a mandatory part of your course. These work terms are usually alternated with academic study terms. At some Canadian institutions, there are Co-op centers that help students find suitable jobs. Students are also paid during their Co-op work terms.
In addition to helping students gain experience and earn extra income to cover living expenses in Canada, the Co-op program offers other valuable benefits such as enabling students to apply what they learn in class to real-life work. It also supports students in building positive relationships with potential employers and colleagues, and helps them develop a stronger resume with richer work experience. The Co-op program allows you to challenge yourself in a real working environment, giving you the opportunity to develop both technical and soft skills that are essential for future success.

- You can only participate in Co-op if your academic program includes a Co-op component.
- You must apply for a Co-op Work Permit, in addition to your Study Permit.
- Co-op durations usually range from 4 to 12 months, depending on the field of study and each institution’s requirements.
